Behold the last few days of sunshine, here in the Gippsland region of Victoria we are being distracted from the imminent cold weather by the beautiful glow bestowed apon us. I'm reminded that this is the gardeners last chance salon to get the winter veggies in. Lest she be gardening in the rain and cold, shivering and cursing the slugs.
Things to plant now:
- Root crops such as Carrots, Beetroot, Celeriac, Turnip & Swede
- Brassica crops such as Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and Kale
- Green leafies such as spinach, bok choy, tatsoi and rainbow silverbeet (chard) for colour too
- Alliums such as onions, shallots, leeks and garlic
- More garlic...you can eat the tops through winter just like chives and they will help the 'ol immune system keep up throughout the cold and flu season
- Sugar snap peas and some beans, this will depend on your particular area. Check out our favourite place to get seeds, Diggers
- Herbs depending on what you like, coriander can go in but basil is finishing off. All other culinary herbs should be good
- If you have any left over room that is going to waste put down some manure and cover with a thick layer (10cm) of mulch, come spring it will make a lovely home for some lucky veggies
- Don't forget flowers, by the time winter hits you might just need a bit of colour. I love calendula, it's so easy to grow that it will self seed and it's bright heads shine through the winter fog.
